Jean-Frédéric Bazille was a French Impressionist painter (one of the early impressionist group). Many of Bazille's major works are examples of figure painting in which Bazille placed the subject figure within a landscape painted en plein air. As a young artist in mid-century Paris, Bazille began associating with revolutionary painters, especially Impressionists, but he retained his own style, which was more moderate.
