Akseli Gallen-Kallela was a Swedish-speaking Finnish painter who is best known for his illustrations of the Kalevala, the Finnish national epic. His work was considered very important for the Finnish national identity. His was a leading figure in modern Finnish painting and the decorative arts, who studied painting in Helsinki and Paris. By the mid-1890s hebegan to incorporate Symbolist motifs in his work. His landscape paintings of about 1900 show the influence of both Gauguin and Monet
