Oil on canvas
100 x 120 cm
Thyssen-Bornemisza Museum, Spain.
In the mid-thirties Kirchner abandoned the abstract linear rhythms and cubist planes of colour that had characterized his work for the previous ten years, in order to evolve towards a more directly figurative style. Junkerboden Under Snow has a both romantic and pantheistic atmosphere and simplified formal structure. The great snowy surface creates an empty space that magnifies the effect of monumentality of the heavy mountainous mass in the centre. The curves of the landscape seem to strung together rhythmically, helping to stress the feeling of immensity (the feeling of aloneness before the landscape and union with it). The colour contrasts, with the bold reddish touches of the firs blazing like flames, fill the surface of the canvas with vibrancy.
