With its pastel Impressionist palette and accentuated linearity, Evening Light on the Hill, Berkshire Mountains stands as a prime example of the snowy New England landscapes that made George Gardner Symons famous. Born in Chicago in 1861, he first trained at the Art Institute before venturing with his artist friend William Wendt to California, Paris, Munich, and London in search of fresh landscape subjects. During the 1890s, the artists' colony at St. Ives in England particularly influenced Symons' appropriation of plein-air painting, a technique he continued to utilize upon his return to the U.S., whether working in California or New York.
Symons was a member of the National Academy of Design, National Arts Club, Institute of Arts and Letters, Salmagundi Club, and Royal Society of British Artists. His paintings grace the collections of the Chicago Art Institute; Metropolitan Museum of Art, New York; Mulvane Art Museum, Washburn University, Topeka; Norton Simon Museum of Art, Pasadena; and Phillips Collection, Washington, D.C.
