Arlequin à Venise jouant du violon, 1941
gouache on paper
In 1938 Dufy visited Venice and executed a series of watercolours of the landmarks of the city. Between 1939 and 1942 Dufy would then draw on this imagery to create a number of oils and watercolours of harlequins set against Venetian backgrounds. The harlequin figures in the foregrounds, executed in Dufy’s typically strong colours, are often playing musical instruments, as in Arlequin à Venise jouant du violon, a reflection of Dufy’s wider interest in music and the orchestra theme.
