COIN DE MAISON
circa 1907-10
Oil on canvas
Private Collection, United States.
The present work belongs to an important and transitional period in Bonnard’s oeuvre. Whereas in the late nineteenth century Bonnard’s art was characterized by an affinity for the Nabis aesthetic and a more decorative approach to representation, his output from the early twentieth century would reveal his increasing interest in direct observation of nature. He found much inspiration during this period in his many travels around the Mediterranean Sea and South France, not to mention prolonged stays at his house in Vernon.
Focusing especially on landscapes and interior views, Bonnard experimented with unusual perspectives and methods of framing his compositions. The complex images that resulted, suffused with the artist’s characteristically vivid palette, provide stunning visual documentation of Bonnard’s unique vision, a direct translation of the world as he saw it.
