Oil on canvas
62.2 x 48.3 cm
National Gallery of Canada, Canada.
Near the end of his first month in residence at Saint-Remy, Vincent asked Theo to send him more canvas, explaining that it was "just the season when there are plenty of flowers and consequently color effects." In this work, he captured the sinuous vitality of the flower with its single full blossom—sword-shaped petals of bright blue shot with yellow—standing triumphantly above its long, slender leaves and the coarse growth of rough, wild grass.
