Oil on canvas
97.8 cm (38.5 in.) x 78.7 cm (30.98 in.)
Private collection.
In the Pearlman Collection (USA). This canvas is from an opera called Messaline that Lautrec saw in Bordeaux. He had been attracted to performers on stage as many of his works depict, though these were frequently characters from dance halls and cabarets. The artist had an interest in Japanese woodblock prints and this is echoed in the unusual vantage point from which he painted the subject. Lautrec also captured the effect the gaslights used in theatres of the time reflected on to the bodies of the performers.
