The subject was taken from Chateaubriand's novel 'Atala' which tells the fate of the Natchez tribe during the Franco-Indian War (1754-63). The story is when two young tribespeople travelled up the Mississippi River and the woman gives birth. Delacroix chose the moment when the newborn was held in the hands of the man whilst the woman rests from her labour.
