Gauguin paid tribute to Vincent's passion for sunflowers in a portrait he painted early in December 1888. Much later, in October T903, when recalling his stay in Aries, Gauguin claimed that the portrait startled Vincent, who looked at the work and said, "That's me all right, but me gone mad." The portrait honors the bond of friendship between the two artists, although they never saw each other again after Gauguin's departure from Aries.
