Irving Eager Couse chose to paint Native Americans as peaceful and dignified human beings. He had already painting Indians from other parts of the United States when he arrived in Taos, New Mexico. He had heard about the Northern New Mexico village from his fellow student in Paris, Joseph Henry Sharp. In 1912 he was elected the first president of the Taos Society of Artists. Couse’s paintings and those by other members of the Taos Society of America brought national attention to the Taos Pueblo Indians. His images were influential in changing the public’s perception of the West.
