Oil on canvas
The Walters Art Museum, Baltimore, Maryland, United States.
Although this painting was originally named simply Springtime, it was given a new name, The Reader, at one of the Impressionist exhibitions. The canvas depicts Monet's first wife, Camille Doncieux, who served as his model throughout the 1860s and 1870s, and whom he married in 1870. Camille is said to have great talent as a model, and was also portrayed by Pierre Renoir and édouard Manet . The Reader, like many of Monet's other works from this period, comes from his garden in Argenteuil. The model is seated under a canopy of lilac flowers, through which the sun's rays shine through, creating a mosaic on both the grass and Camilla's dress.
