Taos Pueblo is one of the most complex small paintings ever created by the artist. It was this pueblo that was the source of many of the models used by Couse during his many years (1902 - 1936) of painting and residency in Taos. The back drop for the painting is the Sangre de Cristo mountains, which are sacred to the Taos Indians. Couse spent many days in these mounttains taking photographs and making sketches which were used in the creation of firsthand works in his Taos studio, a few miles from the Pueblo.
