Oil on masonite
Private Collection, Santa Fe, New Mexico.
It was in the rocky canyons near Hayden, Colorado where Frank Tenney Johnson began to examine and master the effects of moonlight upon the Western landscape. Johnson's understanding and refined technique of nocturne painting would later become his trademark, making him one of America's leading Western painters. At a young age, Johnson was an apprentice to Frederick William Heine (1845-1921), whose talent in painting equestrians influenced Johnson's desire to master the anatomy of the horse. In 1935, while Johnson was living in Wyoming near the Shoshone River, he completed a painting for his friend in exchange for a Palomino horse named Tejon, who would frequently be used as his model.
Under the Open Sky is a perfect marriage of Johnson's abilities in capturing light and color under moonlight, the anatomy of the horse, and the classic portrayal of Western life.
