story illustration, McClure's magazine, June 1920
Oil on canvas
36 x 24 in.
Dunton painted this illustration for the June 1920 McClure's magazine, the first in a series of McClure's issues in which Zane Grey's Wanderer of the Wasteland was serialized. This image appeared on two pages (10 and 11) of that issue, with the hatless man and the group of Mexicans behind him on the left-hand page (10) and the falling figure on the right-hand page (11), with the caption: "With a powerful jerk Adam pulled the Mexican off his feet, swinging him round until his hold on the knife loosened. The knife flew one way, the Mexican the other." Please note that only the figures in gray (including the knife) are by Dunton's hand; all the landscape and any color (including the sandal of the falling Mexican) were added in someone else's hand at a later date.
