Painted during his time at the Saint-Remy asylum, Wheatfield with a Reaper reveals Vincent's enduring fascination with the labors of the field. Under a vibrant sun, the small anonymous figure makes his way through the swirling wheat, swinging his sickle and cutting the gram. Vincent claimed to have completed the painting during his first attack at Saint-Remy, but in a letter to Theo, written in September after his recovery, he writes," Reaper is finished.. .it is an image of death as the great book of nature speaks of it." In it Vincent sought to portray an aspect of benevolence, a death "almost smiling," and he confided to Theo, "I find it queer that I saw it like this from between the iron bars of a cell" (Letter 604).
