In 1868 the industrialist Frederic Hartmann commisioned a cycle of the four seasons from Millet. This unfinished painting of peasant women carrying firewood was intended to represent winter. Millet described such a scene in 1851: 'One sees a poor, heavily laden creature with a bundle of faggots advancing from a narrow path in the fields ... a momentary reminder of the fundamental condition of human life, toil'. Formerly in the distinguished collection of Henri Rouart, this work was purchased by Gwendoline Davies in 1912.
