1876
Oil on canvas
Collection of Otto Krebs, Holzdorf
Now in the Hermitage, St. Petersburg, Russia.
In the background of the painting is depicted Claude Monet's second home in Argenteuil. In the period when Impressionism was on the rise, Argenteuil became one of the favourite places for the artists of the group. This village on the Seine attracted them with its proximity to unspoiled nature. In 1871, Monet rented his first house here, signalling the end of the somewhat bohemian existence. Henceforth, many of his paintings would reflect the life of a family man. Monet enthusiastically painted his house, its garden, and at times depicted his wife Camille, alone or with their son, against this backdrop. In the autumn of 1874, Monet moved to another house depicted in the present picture.
